We are now in the immediate post COVID - 19 Era. This is
definitely a milestone moment in the history of mankind and our lives as we
have lived to date as I do believe, significant changes will occur in the way
we live, post this pandemic of global proportions.
Firstly, let me clarify that I
intend to post a series of posts to document my personal views of the situation
as I see it, and consequently, this is not intended to be a commentary on any
person, country or system. Part of my thoughts can be totally fictional
as thoughts at times tend to be. Any slight or objection is fully
unintended.
Life will go on as it tends to,
irrespective of challenges, some face it more stoically than others.
Countries went into lock-down but in due course will have to open up and let
life proceed as we know it. Given the overall mortality rate, a majority
of the global population will survive the pandemic, for now, still given the
mortality rate there will be those who do not make it to the other side of the
pandemic. Most of the old occupations will continue, but some will
disappear and new ones will appear. So then, why is it a different era?
One of the first lessons in
economics which remains in memory for me is the Malthusian Theory. Refer
to the Wikipedia link for more details on this theory.
The theory basically relates to population and states that population grows
exponentially, while food and other resources grow in a linear manner i.e. not
as fast as the population. So in order to ensure that these are matched
there are two types of checks in place. One - Preventive checks - These
are checks by humans to reduce the population growth by their own actions,
primarily self-control and planning. Two - Positive checks - This is nature's
way of reducing the population by way of natural disasters, the way we were
taught the theory, I understood that when Preventive checks fail Positive
checks occur.
When the earlier pandemics
occurred, it did change the way of life significantly. The importance of
clean drinking water, sanitation processes were developed and hygiene practices
evolved. These continue to date. This pandemic will also
leave a similar legacy of "NEW" practices. It is these new
practices which will change the way we live our lives.
In a series of posts, I intend to share my thoughts on how this the new era will pan out, the impact on Globalization, Education systems, Corporate
practices, Food and Beverages, Human relationships, Medical science,
Occupations, Compensation practices, Tourism, Investments, Industries, Travel
and all aspects of the world in which we live. More importantly, the economics of the whole
thing will also be something I would love to share.
It was in 2019 that the first case of Coronavirus came out in the
news channels as something that China was struggling with. A very small part of the news, the rest of
the news was focused on forward-looking events like Brexit, Trade Wars, upcoming
elections, movie releases, sporting events as big as Olympics and of course global
trade-related events and conferences. Terrorism
and geopolitical hotspots were regularly featured in one or the other news
streams.
We celebrated the new year with a forward-looking agenda of resolutions
for the new year and by February 2020, the majority of the news globally was
only Coronavirus, all other news items which were till then the centrepiece
became a byline. Compare the news of the postponement
of the Olympics as a percentage of airtime against the news on Coronavirus for
the day. No competition.
Stay tuned to the post, after all, need to make some constructive
use of the lock-down and general significant increase in "ME" time, what better
way than to create a blog series!!!!
